Bible in the Bedroom: Toward a Biblical View of Sex

You should have seen some of the looks I got when I told the congregation I was going to talk about sex. For as long as I can remember (which isn’t very long comparatively speaking) the topic of sex has been more than a little taboo in the Church. To be sure, sex is a very personal and intimate topic that should be discussed with utmost care and sensitivity. However, as our culture has become more and more sexualized we Christians have tended more towards the head-in-the-sand approach. It is as if we think if we ignore it, it will go away. We have done an outstanding job at rejecting…

A Page Has Turned: On the Death of Billy Graham

As a North Carolinian, and an evangelical Christian I have spent most of my life knowing who Billy Graham was. Whether or not you agreed with him theologically, methodologically, or philosophically you cannot deny the influence and impact he had on the second half of the twentieth century. I’ve spent some time researching his life, enjoyed spending time at his “library” in Charlotte, and watched many hours of documentaries on the man Billy Graham. Today, as we mourn his passing, I have found myself unexpectedly emotional. I don’t know exactly why, since I can’t say I was a personal friend of Mr. Graham. I never went to one of his…

    Coming Soon! Romans Study

God’s Word is amazing! It is sharper than any two-edged sword. It is living and active, and it never returns void. No matter how much you study, you cannot completely plumb the depths of the Bible. We can always learn more, not just for information’s sake, but for transformation. About a year ago I embarked, along with the good folks at our church, on a journey through the book of Romans. Undoubtedly, this is one of the monumental books in the Bible and it covers so much theological ground. What I want to do is begin to share this journey with you through a series of teaching videos. Steel yourselves…

    Jesus Who?

Courtesy of ba1969 Through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 2 Peter 1:3b. If you ask people whether or not they believe in Jesus you would probably find the overwhelming majority of people answer affirmatively. In the face of the historical evidence for His existence denying that a man called Jesus lived in first century Palestine would be like denying gravity, or holding to the idea that the earth is flat. The simple fact is that history shows that Jesus lived. The trouble comes, not from verifying His life, but in understanding what that life meant and who, exactly, this Jesus was.…

    Hand Picked: 1 Peter 2:9 Part 1.

Photo courtesy of Mattox Today my aim is to begin a five part series of posts on 1 Peter 2:9. In this one verse we have a beautiful explanation of who we are as believers in Jesus Christ and children of God. Not only that, but at the end of the verse Peter tells us exactly why God has made us and called us to Himself. The inspiration for this series came to me, not from the book of 1 Peter itself, but actually from 1 Corinthians 3:3 which says, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are…

A Shift in our Perspective on Blessings

This song, by Laura Story, was sung by two of our praise team members yesterday at church as the musical special. It is one that I’ve heard many times on the radio but hearing it and seeing the lyrics yesterday morning really brought it home to me. Then as I was reading the Bible this morning I was struck by Psalm 78:25 which reads; Man did eat the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance. This is a Psalm that is recounting Israel’s time in the wilderness and how, even though God was so faithful to take care of them at every turn they still managed to turn…

Book Review: The Fight of Our Lives

The Fight of Our Lives by William Bennett and Seth Leibsohn is not only a reflection on our country’s failures in the war on terror but also an attempt to formulate some strategies for victory.  The opening chapter is focused on the Fort Hood massacre that happened in 2009. The use of this incident, and other terrorist attacks, as case studies becomes the framework for the rest of the book. What happened? How did American respond? Why did we respond in that way? How should we have responded? These are some of the questions that Bennett and Leibsohn seek to answer in this book. As a reader I typically don’t…

Paul would have been a NASCAR fan.

This past Sunday evening, May 29th, I was able to witness something that I’ve always wanted to see in person…a NASCAR race. That’s right, my wife, her two brothers and I went to the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I’ve always been sort of a mild fan of NASCAR. I grew up being a Richard Petty fan because, well, he’s “the King” and who can’t appreciate a guy that sports a feathered cowboy hat. Then there’s the whole premise behind NASCAR. Take a “stock” car and fill its engine compartment with a massive V-8 engine, install only as much exhaust hardware as is absolutely necessary and drive it around…
